“Cell Breakers” put people in jail for money
For the
second year in a row, a team from Two Bridges Regional Jail participated in
the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life walk held at Brunswick
High School on May 21st and 22nd. The team, called the “Cell
Breakers,” raised over a $1,000 in just four hours by selling “arrest
warrants”. The “Relay Police” would bring the arrestee in handcuffs to a
make-shift jail. There they were clothed in a bright orange inmate shirt,
and were given 30 minutes to raise a
bail. Those that were not able to make bail in the allotted time were
chained with other unfortunate inmates and voluntarily participated in the
“Chain Gang’s Walk of Shame” around the track. In addition to the “Jail and
Bail” activity, the team also sold homemade baked/canned items and raffle
tickets for items including a King Kooker Smoker donated by Ames Supply and
Adirondack chairs donated by B&S Woodworking. One hundred percent of the
money raised went to the American Cancer Society.
Members of the Cell Breakers include Team Co-Captains Diane Hammond and Maureen Smith, Officer James Read, Sgt. Steven Schutt, Officer Ryan Sherman, Officer Twyla Caulfield, Officer Bruce Stockford, Lt. James Bailey, Sgt. Darryl Groh, Traci Moeller, Laurel Noddin, and Mary Sue Weeks.
Relay
for Life fundraising activities for The Cell Breakers began in early April
where they set up
their portable jail at Ames Supply in Wiscasset and Tire Warehouse in
Topsham. During these fundraising events Sheriff Todd Brackett of Lincoln
County, Sheriff Joel Merry of Sagadahoc County and Correctional
Administrator Mark Westrum were arrested and solicited donations to raise
bail.
After raising well over $2,000 the Cell Breakers are anxiously planning for next year’s event which will certainly include our public officials and many more community members. For further information on the event, please visit RelayForLife.org.
